History of the Ossuary in Sedlec has been turbulent.
The Cistercian
monastery in Sedlec, founded in 1142, obtained rights over nearby Malín
and other churches. The obligations of the parish also included burying
the dead and the Ossuary originally served the purpose. An interesting
incident related to Heidenrech - Abbot of the monastery – had a crucial
impact on the history of the church. In 1278 (during the reign of king
Přemysl Otakat II) was Heidenrech sent on diplomatic mission to Holy Land
in Jerusalem. The Abbot of the Monastery is said to brought a handful of
earth from the Grave of Lord and to have it scattered it over the cemetery.
The earth thus became a part of Holy Land and people were buried here from
neighborous as well as from abroad. Thousands of people found here their
last place of rest, especially at time of plaque outbrake in 1318, when
the number of people buried in Sedlec was estimated at 30 thousands. The
number of graves increased during the Hussite Wars, severals battles took
place close to the town (i.e. the battle of Malešov in 1421). At the same
time, the Husitte army burned down the Sedlec Monastery and assassinated
all 500 monks. After Hussite Wars had been finished, there began works on
construction of the All Saints cemetery chapel. Parts of large cemetery
were abolished and bones from graves were piled up around the chapel but
were later removed to its lower part. In the 16th century, a half-blind
monk piled them into six p yramids.
It seems in the 17th century bone decorations were rearranged.
Significant Baroque modification of the Ossuary (carried out by Jan
Santini Aichl) took place between 1700 – 1709 and the old bone decorations
were replaced. Candelabras with skulls decorations are dated from 1743 (discovered
during restoration). The present-day decoration results from repair works
carried out by František Rint from Česká Sklaice in 1870. The wood carver
František Rint was invited by Schwarzenbergs’ from Orlík. They were the scions of famous aristocratic
family and owners of Sedlec dominion at that time. All bones were
disinfected and bleached with chlorinated lime prior to use. Of the
original six pyramids of bones, Rint removed two, and used part of bones
for decoration. The rearranging works did not take less than three years.
It has been estimated that the remains of 40 thousands persons were used
to decorate the Ossuary in Sedlec. For decades, the Ossuary has reminded
visitors of the limits of human life and inevitability of death. This
marvellous piece of work may lead us to reflect on our existence, seeking
mutual harmonic coexistence and to be aware of responsibility for our own
life and not to take it for granted.

Sedlec
Ossuary consists of two floors – at presence, they are both open to the
public. The Ossuary is located in the bottom chapel, embedded in ground,
with unique human bone decorations and four pyramids made of remains of
about 40 thousands persons. The chapel in the upper part serves as an
exhibition providing more information about the operation of Cistercian
order in Sedlec over past centuries (including i.e. life of monks in the
monastery, etc.).
Following
pictures provide more detailed view on decoration of interior in the
bottom chapel and exhibiotion in the upper chapel.
